Church Rocks—A Portal to Another World

Just a few minute’s walk from the Paseos neighborhood is a tunnel that extends underneath Interstate-15. While a large aluminum tube built as a viaduct to carry flood waters may seem unremarkable, it is in many ways a magical portal to another world.

The tunnel, which is easily 12-feet in diameter, provides for an easy walk or bike ride. Once on the other side, a beautiful vista of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve opens up as you are instantly transported from suburbia to wilderness.

The reserve, spanning 69,000 acres, was established in 1996, to protect the Mojave Desert tortoise and other plants and animals. It is at the confluence of three significant ecosystems – the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert. It is home to several species found nowhere else in the world.

In addition to being an eco-treasure, Red Cliffs is also an amazing playground for hikers and bikers alike.

The trails just beyond the tunnel lead to an easy hike to Church Rocks, where on top you can an enjoy a sweeping 360-degree panorama that includes a beautiful view of Pine Mountain.

To reach the tunnel, go to the corner of Highland Parkway (1870 North) and Tailored Road (2170 East) in Washington City. It’s about a 10-minute walk from Crimson Ridge. There is room to park a car there, or you can also bike. Take the dirt trail north. At the T, veer to the right. About 50 yards before that trail dead-ends, take a trail to the left that will take you down through the trees and to the entrance of the tunnel.
